In our blog post, Benefits of Natural Gas Fireplace Over Wood-Burning Fireplace, we described three key reasons why we have doubts that wood-burning fireplaces will be the go-to for future homeowners across Canada (cost efficiency, variability, and convenience). We can still recognize the virtues of the traditional, wood-burning fireplace. Thus, here are four reasons why Wood-Burning fireplaces can be better than natural gas fireplaces.
Necessity
The most obvious reason wood-burning fireplaces would be a better choice over natural gas is if you simply don't have access to natural gas. If you are one of those people who live remotely to any city or town, or perhaps you just don't feel like getting a gas line installed, you may have your house run on propane instead of having a natural gas pipeline fed to your home. In this case, you likely would want to keep your propane for appliances, like your water boiler, and gather wood for your fireplace.
Another major reason that falls under the category of "necessity" is the fact that a gas fireplace installation can be relatively expensive. Not only will you need to cover the cost of the fireplace installation, but also the natural gas line network if you don't already have one. Which must legally be done by certified gas fitters and up to your city's code.

You Have a Lot of Access to Firewood
Canada is vast and full of nature. You may have tons of access to firewood, especially if you live in British Columbia, where the forestry industry provides tons of leftover wood that can't be used for lumber. If this is the case for you, going through the effort and expenses of converting your wood-fired fireplace to a gas-fueled may not be ideal for you.
You Simply Want It
This reason is one of the most important reasons to have a wood-burning fireplace. You genuinely prefer it over a gas fireplace. Although gas fireplaces can imitate a wood fireplace incredibly well, they can never be the exact same. Gas fireplaces can't provide that nostalgic smell of burning wood and loud crackling that people love.
