Recipe of The Month: Grilled Birthday Cake

Happy Birthday, Canada, you beautiful, sexy beast!

What better way to celebrate our country than to grill up copious amounts of, well, anything! Now barbecuing isn’t originally a Canadian thing (apparently the term originated with the word barabicu from the Taino people of the Caribbean and translates to “sacred fire pit.” Sounds about right, doesn’t it?), but we’ve certainly made it part of every day life. We’ll fire up the grill no matter what: rain or shine, sleet or snow, natural gas or propane, charcoal or wood-fired.

So to celebrate Canada's Birthday, we are grilling up some birthday cake!


- 1 homemade or store bought angel food cake
- ½ cup whipping cream
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon whiskey, optional
- Raspberries or strawberries, to serve

Angel Food Cake

Step 1:
Preheat grill to medium heat; cut cake into six pieces using a serrated knife and set aside.

Home made Whip Cream

Step 2:
Whip cream on low speed of an electric mixer just until it starts to thicken up a bit. Add sugar, and then increase speed to high and beat until the cream is thick. Fold in the whiskey, if using.

Cake on the Grill

Step 3:
Place one piece of cake (they cook quickly, so just grill one at a time) cut side down on the grill and let cook for about 10 seconds. Turn the piece of cake over and grill the other side; transfer to serving dishes.

Grilled Cake with Whip Cream and Raspberries

Step 4:
Top each piece with a dollop of whipped cream and a handful of berries. Stick a candle in the top, light it, and wish Canada a Happy Birthday!
