So you've already bought a gas or propane grill, but you've stumbled upon our diverse pellet, woodchips and chunks selection at one of our stores. Right about now, you feel like you're missing out on the rich flavours of smoked barbecue. So, now you're wondering how you can smoke meat on a gas grill. We have two words for you: smoker box... woodchips... wood chunks... pellets... fire... delicious... ok a maybe a couple more than two.
What is a smoker box?
Good question! Smoker boxes are often made of stainless steel and are meant to hold woodchips and/or pellets, so that you can enjoy smoky flavours without having to buy a whole new charcoal or pellet barbecue.
How do smoker boxes work?
Also a great question! Since the boxes are made of metal, they will conduct the heat that is produced by your barbecue to the woodchips or pellets inside. The contents inside will eventually catch fire. When this happens, ensure the lid on your box is on so that the chips come to a nice low and slow smoulder, which will generate the most delicious smelling smoke. You can then begin to cook your food with your barbecue lid down so that the food will absorb all the flavourful smoke.
Bonus Tip: If your smoker box is big enough (or your drip pan is small enough), you can fill a drip pan with water and place it inside your smoker box. This will produce more smoke. This will also slightly lower the ambient temperature of your cook so your food can cook slower, which will in turn let your food absorb more smoke.
